Steelers E-mail Account For You

SteelersFan.net now has free e-mail accounts. The free account doesn't offer the best of services and the add-ons are pricey. Cool to have Steelers e-mail account though.

Joey Porter's Knee Surgery

Joey had the third surgery in two years on his knee. He has only missed 6 games in his NFL career, 2 were last year due to a hamstring injury. Before the '05 season he missed most of training camp and all of the preseason games due to a knee surgery.

Joey is fearless on the field and emotional leader to be sure. The loss of his presence will be felt by the Steelers. But the Steelers, did what they have always done....let the aging, big money free agent get paid elsewhere. Porter signed a $32 million contract with the Dolphins, $20 million of it is guaranteed. Is a guy with 2 knee surgeries worth that? Is a guy with 3 knee surgeries worth it?

Sounds like letting Joey go was a win for the Steelers and for Joey. Porter got his big pay day and I am happy for him. The Steelers got rid of a big salary cap hit on an aging player and I am even happier for that!

Joey Porter was a great part of the Steelers. His attitude and toughness fit the team perfectly. I wish him nothing but the best and hope he has many great seasons left in the NFL (but not on Nov. 26th when the Dolphins come to Heinz Field).

Time will only tell Joey's productivity, but don't forget what happend when the Steelers let an aging CB coming off a knee surgery leave the team. Perhaps you have heard of him, Rod Woodson.

Hall Of Fame Game

So we start off the season (and this blog) with the first preseason game. But before getting into the preseason game, let's look at the events leading up to this point.

Coming off of the Superbowl win in Detroit, nobody was prepared for the 8-8 season that was endured last season. Then the offseason saw the departure of the teams leader, Coach Cowher. Next came the hunt for a new coach which kept most of Steelernation glued to any and every news outlet they could find. After letting Ken Whisenhut and Russ Grimm head for the desert, Dan Rooney let us all know Mike Tomlin was his man. Uncertainty swirled around the decision, but it's hard to argue with a Rooney coaching decision. And in one final blow, the emotional leader of the team, Joey Porter moved to South Florida.

Heading into Sundays Hall of Game, there were many questions and few answers as to what the 2007 season has in store for the Steelers. Of course we all know that you can't judge a team based on preseason football. So much can in will change in the coming weeks. Players cut, plays cut, plays added, injuries etc, etc, etc.

So Steelernation can't get excited over ONE preseason game right?

WRONG WRONG WRONG

Big Ben's 73 yard pass to Wilson on the opening drive was something to get excited about!

Davenport ending the drive with a 4 yard rumble into the end zone was certainly something to get excited about!

William Gay lit up Robert Meachum and later picked off a pass, I'm excited!

Carey Davis had 100 all purpose yards in the game. And did you see him plowing through would-be tacklers?!?! Steelernation should be excited!

So we had plenty to be excited about. But Steelers fans are smart fans. We know this is just the preseason, but we also know that we liked what we saw last night. A hard hitting team is what we love and that's just what we saw last night. We saw hard hits on offense and defense. We saw our team control the ball nearly 11 minutes longer than our opponent. We saw a Steelers team that was excited. Most importantly, we saw a Steelers team that had it's swagger back!
